Getting pulled over for a traffic violation is never a good time. Chances are you are going to end up with a nice ticket that you will have to pay. If this is your first traffic violation, you may be confused as to what will happen next. The following are some things you need to know when dealing with a traffic ticket:
Call the Number on the Ticket
On your ticket, there will be a phone number that you will need to call to get additional details. When you call, you can likely expect an automated menu with a variety of options. Choose the option that seems close enough to the questions you have.
You will need some additional details before you can deal with the ticket. You can find out how much your ticket will cost, whether or not you will need to go to court, what to do if you want to contest it, and the like. If you do not like the automated system, you can hold and speak to a real person. That is going to be an ideal option so that you can get some concrete answers. Be sure to note the name of the person you speak to for reference.
Pay Your Fine
The next step is to pay your fine. Depending on the violation, the amount can be small or astronomical. You may have to appear in person to pay the fine, or you may have the option to mail a check or money order. You will need to discuss payment options when you call about your ticket.
If you want to fight your ticket, you will need to attend court to deal with your traffic violation. You will need to research what you will need to bring to court. Be prepared to be away from your job for the day, as there is no way to know how long the appearance will take. Chances are you are going to be behind a long line of other traffic violators.
You can go to court without an attorney if you prefer, but you may have an easier time if you work with one that specializes in traffic violations.
Work With an Attorney
If you choose to move forward with an attorney, you may not have to deal with any aspect of your ticket in person. Your attorney will take the responsibility for your case and fight it for you in court if necessary. It is possible to have a much better outcome when working with a lawyer. You will only need to call your attorney to get an update on the status of your case.
